A Celebration of George William Veditz on His 100th NAD Presidency Anniversary: 2004-2010

George William Veditz, the 7th president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), was one of the few who fought diligently to keep American Sign Language (ASL) alive when it was in danger of being extinct in the early 1900's. He was also the first NAD president to serve two terms (1904-1910)

Born to German immigrants in Baltimore on August 13, 1861, he spoke both German and English before he became deaf when he was eight years old. When entering the Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick, Maryland in 1875, he learned ASL.

To recognize his NAD presidency anniversary, the Library Friends Section of the National Association of the Deaf (LFS-NAD) will dedicate its booth to him at the upcoming 49th Biennial conference of the NAD which will meet in New Orleans, July 7-11, 2008. The booth theme will be called GOT DEAF CULTURE @ YOUR LIBRARY?

Amy Bopp, LFS-NAD president and Alice L. Hagemeyer, outreach coordinator, have just mailed letters to members informing them of a plan to carry out the LFS-NAD mission. Members have also been encouraged to help promote deaf culture in their local community.

The LFS-NAD mission is to promote library access and quality resources for the American Deaf Community.
