Conference Call for Papers & Workshops

The editorial board for the Deaf Studies Today! conference is soliciting abstracts for presentations at the conference April 10-12, 2008 atUtah Valley State College (UVSC). UVSC is located in Orem, Utah, thirty-five miles south of Salt Lake City. Abstracts received through January 1, 2008 will be considered.

The third biennial Deaf Studies Today!
conference will be held on the Utah Valley State College (UVSC)1 campus in Orem, Utah April 10-12, 2008. The theme for the conference is “Montage” in reference to the interdisciplinary natureof the Deaf Studies field. The conference is pleased to feature three keynote addresses to the general body fromprominent scholars in the field. We are thrilled that Dr. M. J. Bienvenu and Ella Mae Lentz have both acceptedinvitations to present keynote addresses, and we look forward to announcing our third speaker soon. The conference will also feature plenary sessions, paper presentations and workshops by various professionals.

Papers

We are asking for presentations that cover a broad range of topics related to Deaf people, their language, culture, andissues. Presentations should be based on original work and present current research/thinking relevant to the field ofDeaf Studies, including but not limited to perspectives from anthropology, history, linguistics, interpretation andtranslation, education, psychology, sociology, public administration, political science, social work, philosophy, ethics, art, law, literature, ASL instruction, audiology and any number of other allied disciplines.

Those selected to present at the conference will generally be given a 40-minute time slot consisting of 30 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions. (Alternative presentation times may be arranged as warranted.) All paperpresenters must submit an electronic copy of their papers no later than May 1, 2008. All of the papers presented at theconference, along with the keynote addresses, will be included in the conference proceedings. (This is a nonexclusiveuse of the work, which allows writers to publish elsewhere with only a note that it appeared in the proceedings first.)

Workshops

Deaf Studies Today!
features workshops intended to inform and assist students and professionals in Deaf studies, aswell as those aimed at helping Deaf people. Workshops will generally be “hands on” in nature and may take a “How-to approach” to some subject matter. For example, one might present workshops such as “How to build and promote ASLand Deaf Studies programs in academic settings”; “How to secure funding for graduate school”; “How to tell a story inASL”; etc. These workshops need not necessarily present research findings, but they should be beneficial and of interest to conference goers. Workshop presentations will not be included in the conference proceedings; however,presenters and the titles of their presentations will be.

Paper presenters and workshop presenters are required to register for the conference. Workshop presenters can register for at a reduced rate of $200. Paper presenters register at the regular rate and then they receive $150 when a final,
publication quality manuscript is submitted.2

Proposal Submission Requirements

1)
An abstract of no more than 300 words describing the research to be presented. Must state clearlywhether it is a paper or a workshop.

Presenter information: (Not given to editorial board for consideration)
a) Name(s) of presenter(s)
b) Contact information for each presenter
c) Institutional affiliation
d) Language of presentation: ASL or English
e) Technology/Presentation Needs (video projector, white board, etc.)

The editorial board will begin reviewing submissions upon receipt, and we encourage applicants to submit abstracts
immediately. To ensure consideration, presenters should submit their abstracts by January 1, 2008.

Presentation Format

We strongly encourage multimedia presentations. Also, presenters may present in either English or ASL. However,
because of the nature of the conference, we encourage presenters who are fluent in ASL to present their work in thatlanguage. Interpreters will be provided as needed.

Vendors: Promoting Products and Services

We encourage those wishing to promote products and services not
to propose papers or workshops to do so. Rather, weinvite you to participate in the expo, which runs throughout the conference. See the conference web site(www.deafstudies.org) for details.
