Johann Gutenberg
Copperplate engraving illustration in Joseph Moxon, Mechanick Exercises. (London, 1683).This oft-reproduced image of Gutenberg shows the inventor with what appears to be a punch in one hand and a multiple matrix in the other. It is based on an engraving by André Thevet (Paris, 1584). Few scholars now believe that Gutenberg had a beard.
