Typographic Exemplars

16th Century. From an album of excised initials (original source unknown).
As typefaces of the 16th century gradually lost the blockiness or darkness that had characterized the blackletters and early romans, initial letters had to be lighter in design as well. This group of initials was perfectly suited to the elegant, highly finished roman typefaces of mid-16th century Italy and France.
