Digital Wood Type inspired from the collections
Staff at the Cary teach classes for faculty across RIT, and we facilitate student research within the collection. However, we also host external researchers who come from afar to immerse themselves in our extensive typography holdings. In the past three months we have had research visits from historians, printers, and type designers from Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Utah, and Adobe Systems Incorporated.
The latest 21st century work to come from these collaborations is a new digital font inspired by 19th century types in our wood type collection. Adobe designer, Miguel Sousa visited Cary this summer to study rounded sans serif letterforms. Read about his RIT design inspirations for his new typeface, Gothic Round.
