Computing at RIT Libraries

Logging on to Library Workstations

In an effort to improve computing security on campus an RIT user account is required in order to use public workstations -- including the library computers.

You can change your RIT computer account password and manager your account settings at http://start.rit.edu.

Assistance is available at the ITS Help Desk and from the library Reference Desk (475-2563).

RIT alumni, visiting scholars and guests wishing to use library workstations can obtain a temporary username and password from the Reference Desk. These accounts are valid in the library only. Guests that have no affiliation with RIT are limited to 3 guest accounts per year.

Laptops Available for Sign-out

PC laptops are available for check-out at the Circulation Desk. Most have a 4 hour loan period and can be taken out of the building. They are equipped with wireless cards, Microsoft Office and internet browsers. Power cords may be available upon request. An RIT card and one other form of government issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID card, military ID, passport) are required at checkout.

Computer Accessories Available for Purchase

Earbud style headphones are available for purchase at the circulation desk for $3.

RIT's Wireless Network

RIT's Information & Technology Services department has created wireless network access in many locations across campus, including the library.

  • Find complete instructions on wireless access at RIT, including wireless locations, connections instructions and FAQs.
  • Note that in order to connect to the wireless network for the first time, users will need to visit http://start.rit.edu in order to register their mobile device.
  • Current RIT students, faculty, staff and RIT Alumni (after activation here) are all able to connect to the wireless network by following the above instructions.
  • If there are any problems in the registration process please call 475-HELP or visit the ITS help desk.

Printing

Print stations are located both on the first floor in the Re:Search Zone and on the second floor in the VIA Area. Black and white printing is available at both stations for $.08/page. Color printing/copying is also available in the VIA area for $.50/page. A "library account" strip on your ID card is used for printing. You may add money to this account at the Circulation Desk. The circulation desk accepts cash, check or Tiger Bucks.

VIA Area

Located on the second floor, this area includes computing resources such as PCs and Macs, scanners, and microfilm scanners. All workstations provide access to software programs such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, Word, Excel and lots more.

Bibliographic Instruction Lab

Located on the third floor, this room includes a presenter workstation and white board as well as student stations for hands-on classes and workshops.
