Chola, Bagby 30

Title
Chola, Bagby 30
Description
This color photograph features a "chola," a woman of mestizo or indigenous descent, who is is adorned with traditional textile patterns. Like the indigenous women and people featured in Bagby's oeuvre, this image and its title reflect Western viewpoints of the 1950s-70s. The contemporary connotation of the word "Chola" has seemingly devolved into a negative association. This image and its title poses questions as to meaning and association: do contemporary meanings color our perspectives of these peoples, images, and titles in a way unique from their original intended meaning?
