Eastman, George, 1854-1932

Description

The Eastman building opened in April 1901 with a week long extravaganza. It was located on the corner of South Plymouth Avenue and Spring Street in Rochester.  The state of the art building was actually E-shaped to honor its main benefactor. Cost to build this magnificent building: $225,000.
The building was largely funded by George Eastman who felt strongly that the city needed a technological school. The Mechanics Institute was experiencing phenomenal growth at the time, but lacked adequate funds to expand.

The building housed the Industrial & Fine Arts and Domestic Science Department.
