Description

Championship team members  June Johnson, Clea Cooper, Barbi Brill, and Paty Estey hold us at the end of their skilled steel.  Four girls who thought that fencing was something you used to enclose a garden before coming to RIT, in 1955 were commited to winning the school's first Intercollegiate women's fencing championship.

At the time, women fencers competed only in foil, a long steel blade with a rubber tip.  The target is the torso covered by a protective jacket.  The first competitor to score four points won the bout.
