This site highlights the Institute's rich artistic heritage, as internationally known artists, faculty, students, and alumni have contributed their vision to the fabric of RIT.
Buildings, roads, and residences on campus are named to honor individuals associated with the history of the Institute. This website provides an introduction to these people and their many contributions.
In 1963-1964, a Bengal Tiger prowled the halls of RIT. In his short life that cat had a profound influence on the institute and on the students who cared for him.
RIT Archive Collections and the RIT Museum provide the university community with the means to comprehend the institution’s rich and complex history, showcase our art programs through the university art collection, and highlight RIT’s central role in educating the deaf and hard of hearing in the United States.
The RIT Museum, established in 2006, is a permanent space for major exhibits related to the university. The RIT Gallery for History and Art, located on the first floor of the library, features smaller exhibits of interest to the RIT community.
Brief descriptions of the collections are available on this site. Any individual with an interest in the collections is encouraged to contact the archives staff who will assist with any research inquiry.
Please visit the RIT Museum, an environment for learning about the University's rich history. Located outside RIT Archive Collections on the third floor of Wallace Library, the RIT Museum offers themed exhibits that tell the story of RIT.
A selection from the library's unique collection of photographs by students from the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences is currently on view in the RIT Museum. All were acquired as part of library's Purchase Prize Awards program. Each year since 1981, a rotating committee of librarians and photography faculty choose works from the Student Honor Show, a juried exhibition open to students in all departments of the school. The final choices are intended to honor the best work but also reflect the diversity of programs in the school, including advertising, photojournalism, biomedical photography and fine arts. The collection is housed in RIT Archive Collections.
