Indian Village Near Santa Fe, New Mexico, Bagby 5

Title
Indian Village Near Santa Fe, New Mexico, Bagby 5
Description
This toned, black and white photograph features an isolated and empty pueblo-style village indigenous to the Native tribes and peoples of the Southwestern United States. The photograph suggests a metaphoric death of the culture or previous inhabitants through the use of black and white tones to create a harsh contrast that mimics the intense desert light and shadows. The title of the piece, however, implicitly suggests the issues (both modern and historical) with Western images and materials referencing and relating to Native American peoples: distinct peoples are generalized as an exotic, mysterious culture irrespective of the diversity among the native groups and their beliefs, architecture, and contexts.
