Library Terminology:
This page is a glossary of library terms. Librarians often
assume everyone knows what we're talking about when we use
library jargon. This glossary will help you better understand
the differences between citations and abstracts as well as
periodicals and magazines.
How to Do Library
Research
This page provides links to a series of guides on how to
conduct library research, distinguishing scholarly from
non-scholarly sources, evaluating information from the Internet,
finding book reviews/criticisms, creating an effective search
strategy, etc.
Distinguishing
Scholarly from Non-Scholarly Sources
Journals and magazines are important sources for up-to-date
information for all subject areas. Access to the large and
varied journal collection through RIT Library requires the
ability to distinguish between the levels of scholarship
found both in the print and electronic publications. For
the purpose of this guide, types of periodicals have been
divided into four separate categories: Scholarly; Substantive
News or General Interest; Popular; and Sensational.
Evaluating Internet
Sources
Information located on the Internet is unmonitored. Anyone
can create a homepage or put an opinion up on the web. Without
the monitoring apparatus associated with the indexing and
abstracting and research databases typically found in libraries
it is hard to judge the quality of the information. Below
are listed some of the major criteria you should look at
when determining whether or not to use the information you
find on the Internet. Ask yourself the questions listed
below each criteria in relation to the sites that you find.
They should help you to qualify the information.
