How to personalize RIT Email accounts and passwords

To change your RIT computer account (DCE) password:

  • Go to http://start.rit.edu
  • Choose the ‘change your password’ option
  • Enter your current RIT DCE username and password when prompted to log in
Enter your new password in each of the two boxes.
Note: Make sure you type the password exactly the same in each box.
Note: Passwords must be at least 8 characters long
Note: Passwords must contain both letters and numbers
Note: Passwords must contain both uppercase and lowercase letters.
This will change the password for everything which uses your DCE account as your username, including SIS and MyCourses.

To personalize your RIT Email Account:
  • Go to http://start.rit.edu
  • Click on 'Change your mail preferences'
  • Enter your RIT DCE username and password when prompted to login.

Personalizing your RIT email address:
The 'Personalized Email Address' option is for replacing your DCE username in your email address with a preferred nickname. If you enter something here people can then email that nickname at mail.rit.edu. For example: trixie@mail.rit.edu instead of ttt5555@rit.edu.

To Forward your RIT email to another address:

The ‘Forwarding Address’ is where your email will go to. If you wish to use another email address, such shinytruck@hotmail.com or happy@aol.com, then select 'Other:' and enter your email address.

Note: You can only enter one forwarding email address.  The forwarding email address must be a complete and valid email address such as bored@msn.com.  Do not enter a username without the @domain following it.  Do not put more than one address in the field.  If you do not give a single, complete, and valid email address in this form your email will not work.

To give out your RIT Email Address:

The 'Published Address’ is the email address that will be shown in the RIT Directory and on myCourses. It’s recommended that you have this set to 'Your official RIT email address' as this will maintain your privacy if you have email forwarded. This way, your real address will only be given to people when you respond to their emails.

Other Options:

The view options are only used by the RIT Directory, your Published Address will still be listed in your courses on myCourses.

Saving your changes:
To save any changes you have made, be sure to click on the 'Change my Email Settings' button.
