VIA File Transfer Station and Shared Drive

The Transfer Station can read and write to the following:

  • CDs, CD-Rs, and CD–RWs
  • Zip 100MB and 250MBs
  • Floppy Disks
  • Compact Flash Cards (Type I and II)
  • Smart Media Cards
  • Memory Sticks
  • MultiMediaCards
  • SD Cards
  • VIA Shared Drive
Getting Started:
Log into the computer using an RIT DCE username and password. All students, staff, and faculty should have one. If you have forgotten your password or are having problems with your account, you can call ITS at 475-4357, or visit them on the 1st floor of Building 7b. If you do not have an account, you can obtain a temporary one from the reference desk on the first floor of the library. Temporary accounts will last for 4 hours.

To burn a CD:
  • Insert a blank CD into the CD drive.
  • You will be asked what action you'd like the computer to take. Choose “"Open in Explorer Window"”. This will open the CD in a new window.
  • Drag the files you would like to burn into the CD window.
  • When you are done, choose “"Write these files to CD"” from the menu to the left of the window.
  • Click through the wizard to burn the CD.
Using the VIA Shared Drive:
The library has a shared drive which any computer in the VIA Lab can access, as well as all the laptops loaned out by the circulation desk, and patron's home computers. Patrons can save files to this drive from one computer and retrieve them from others. Information saved on the shared drive will usually stay on the drive for several days.
The drive is mounted as the V: drive on all lab PCs. Macs should have a shortcut to it on the desktop.

Shared Drive Etiquette:
Please be kind to other users. Do not delete files belonging to other people, and try not to keep very large files on the shared drive for long periods of time.
To avoid confusion between files, keep your files in a folder with your name, dce name, or some other distinctive name.
