UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS (to be announced):

SOME PREVIOUS SPECIAL EVENTS:

A Connection Celebration!
The Library has always been a place where divergent interests meet and work together. With over 2,400 new students entering RIT this September, it is our mission to assist them in getting connected to our Library Subject Specialists, to other students, and to the services that have been created expressly to help them get the most out of their RIT experience.

The "GET CONNECTED!" theme of this year's Library Open House was designed to reinforce the tremendous importance of networking and asking for help, something many first-year students are hesitant to do. We want to encourage all students to get to know the Library professionals who can make a difference in their college careers. Our annual Fall Open House is purposely designed to offer a fun, relaxed atmosphere in which our staff can welcome the students and reassure them that our mission is to help them succeed and thrive, by virtue of our many useful services, our knowledge, and our appreciation of collaboration and networking.

This year's Open House featured some uniquely different experiences, such as:

  • "Live" Music by local band THE U.S. KINGS (Noon - 1:00 pm) in front of Wallace Library (Bldg. 5)
  • Our "GUEST DJ BOOTH, featuring the custom playlists of various staff members of RIT Libraries
  • "The COMMUNITY CHAIN"; a fun interactive craft project, whereby your customized "LINK" can be part of the chain (a display piece will be created)
  • A plethora of decadent treats, including: COTTON CANDY, FROZEN TREATS, LEMONADE, FRUIT DRINKS, FRESH POPCORN, CANDY, Fresh APPLES, and more!
  • INFORMAL BUILDING TOURS; designed as 10-minute mini-walkthroughs, you are encouraged to ask anyone on staff to take you around to point out the Library "hot spots". Quick, but very helpful..so you know how navigate the building on ensuing visits.

    SPECIAL GUEST VISITORS included:
  • RIT President William Destler
  • RITchie the Tiger

OPEN HOUSE 2006: "Show Your Stripes! "
A renewal of "Tiger team spirit" was the inspiration for the 2006 Library Open House. The staff and student workers of RIT Libraries served up cotton candy, fresh popcorn, frozen treats, lemonade, and conducted informal tours of the facility. Hundreds of customized pins and dozens of feline faces were created by RIT students throughout the day. "RITchie" the Tiger made a special visit, too!

RIT Libraries' OPEN HOUSE 2005: "A Fresh Start"
Featuring cotton candy, fresh popcorn, frozen treats, lemonade, and two "interactivities" for students to enjoy! Hundreds of customized pins and beautifully decorated pots (complete with flower seeds) were created by RIT students on this glorious day in September. The following images provide a glimpse of the fun!

The 2004 Book Arts Fair was exceptionally popular, in part due to the highly interactive nature of the event. Here, guest presenter Walter Bachinski talks with an attendee.

In January 2005 "Getting Into Print: Opportunities in Self-Publishing" was an extremely well-attended special day in the Idea Factory. Here, Douglas Holleley of the Visual Studies Workshop shares experiences with a captivated audience.

The 2004 Presidential Election captured the interest of RIT students in a big way. Over 70 students enjoyed free refreshments in the Idea Factory while they watched the election night coverage on two TV sets.
