Historical Information for RIT Freshman Council (Collapse)

The Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Freshman Council was formed in the fall of 1963. According to the group's constitution, the purpose of the organization was to:

  • Promote organization and spirit in the Freshman class
  • Train members in leadership
  • Provide representation of the Freshman class on Senate and to inform the Freshman.

Although both resident and commuter students could belong to the council, members were required to be full-time students in RIT's freshman class. The group sponsored several campus events and activities each year such as a "spirit contest" during the Tech Tourney Weekend in 1968.

Freshman Council disbanded in 1970. It was felt that the services the group provided were already offered by other campus organizations. Additionally, the administration felt that having a "freshman only" club "discourag[ed] freshmen from participating in activities as active and equal members of the student body. In the fall of 1970, the group was dissolved and its funds redistributed to other campus organizations.
