Abstract
The Millard Van Marter (MV) Atwood collection of political cartoons consists of two original drawings given to Mr. Atwood. One is a political cartoon drawn by Elmer Messner titled Waiting, the other a cartoon drawn by Charles Macauley titled The Homing Pidgeon and dated 1929. Both are signed by the creators. Also included is a copy of Mr. Atwood's obituary from 1941.

Biographical Information for M. V. Atwood (Collapse)

These political cartoons were dedicated to the late M.V. Atwood who came to live in Rochester in 1927. In 1929, he became Associate Editor of Gannett News and and an early associate of Frank Gannett. A graduate of  Cornell University in the class of 1910, he worked his college years as campus correspondent for the Ithaca Daily News. In 1911, he became owner of The Journal and built a group of five country papers which he sold in 1924 to join the growing forces of Frank Gannett. He worked at the Utica Observer-Dispatch for three years brfore coming to Rochester to become the managing editor of The Times-Union. He died in his home in 1941 at the age of 55.

Scope and Content (Collapse)

The Millard Van Marter (MV) Atwood collection of political cartoons consists of two original drawings given to Mr. Atwood. One is a political cartoon drawn by Elmer Messner titled Waiting [10.5 x 13.5"], the other a cartoon drawn by Charles Macauley titled The Homing Pidgeon [13 x 14.5"] and dated 1929. Both are signed by the creators. Also included are copies of Mr. Atwood's obituary from 1941 as they appeared in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and the Times-Union newspapers, and correspondence dated 16 May 2011 from Nora B. Rowan, one of the donors, to Becky Simmons, RIT Archivist regarding the donation.
