Biographical/Historical Information (Collapse)

Art educator and administrator Nancy Stuart began her career at RIT in 1984 as an assistant professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. Prior to coming to RIT she was on the faculty of the Photo Technology Program at Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan. She was elected to chair the Applied Photogarphy Department in 1991. She was eventually appointed Associate Dean of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. She left RIT in 2002 to join the Cleveland Institute of Art as Executive Vice President and Provost. She is now Dean of the Hartford Art School. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

She is a recipient of the John Kobal prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England for her series of portraits of women exposed to Diethylstilbestrol (DES). Visual Studies Workshop Press published a book of the photographs in 2001: DES Stories: Faces and Voices of People Exposed to Diethylstilbestrol .

Scope and Content (Collapse)

The collection includes photographs from three different series of portraits, Stuart's primary subject matter for her photography.

The single photograph - Ten Retired SPAS (School of Photographic Arts and Sciences) Professors is dated March 12, 1999. Depicted are: Leslie Stroebel, Edgar Cohen, Jim McMillion, John Trauger, Tim Holden, Ira Current, Bob Kayser, Douglas Lyttle, Weston Kemp, and Charlie Arnold.

The series of mother/daughter portraits are framed contact prints from 4x5 Polaroids taken at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York during - Women Fest '95" - a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution that gave women the right to vote. Depicted are small groups of mothers, daughters, and grandmothers. All were taken under a tent on the grounds of the Memorial Art Gallery.

Individual portraits of RIT's Technology and Education Center faculty were made in the inaugural year of the summer photography workshops offered through the office. Each mat is signed by the subject. The portraits were made on the 4th floor of the Gannett Building on RIT's campus. Depicted are:
