Caring Hearts for RIT Campus Cats: Volunteer Work with a Feral Cat Population
Kira Barnes has been a cataloging and metadata librarian at RIT Libraries for four years. Prior to that she was a cataloging librarian at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she first got involved with campus feral cats (she now has three former Nebraska ferals in her household). She has been an active member of Caring Hearts for RIT Cats since 2007, feeding cats and helping with the trap/neuter/release program. Kira received her MLS and an MA in French literature from Indiana University.

Shirley has been a member of the Wallace Library staff for 20+ years and has held a variety of positions during that time gaining expertise in user services and library technology. She is currently the Manager of the Library's Digital Assets Team, responsible for providing access to the library's rich collection of electronic resources and maintaining the library's website. She holds an M.L.S. degree in Library and Information Sciences and a B.A. degree in French and Spanish from the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Marianne presents at national/regional conferences and has published articles in information literacies/IT, and open access. She has an MA, University of AZ and a BA English, University of ME.

Witold Bujak, Sustainability Manager, Facility Management Services at RIT
Awakening to Sustainability
Witold Bujak holds an engineering degree from Nowotko Technical Institute in Poland and B.S. degree from RIT. Witold’s career has evolved around development, design and operations of industrial refrigeration, power plants and facilities, and their control systems. His current work at RIT is instrumental in achieving a high level of sustainability and LEED certifications in new construction building on campus. His outside interests range from gardening, kayak-surfing, camping, travel and photography to working with recovery of abused dogs.

Bob has over 30 years of experience in advertising, marketing, graphic design, and commercial illustration. He has served in this present capacity since 2001, as Marketing Communications Specialist for RIT Libraries. His first book, Minus the Imple, was published on Lulu in 2008 and he immediately began a second novel, I Miss Your Purple Hair, slated for 2009 publication, also through Lulu.

Getting LinkedIn to your future: A guide to using LinkedIn for your career
Megan is currently Associate Director of Alumni Relations at the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at RIT. Her work with the alumni of Saunders creates support for the college's scholarships, academic programs, and student activities along with volunteer opportunities that foster a strong connection with the college. She also works on events for the college, the Dividends newsletter, and social networking outreach on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Over the past two years she has presented on social networking best practices in the RIT and Rochester Communities with a strong focus on Facebook and LinkedIn. Before RIT, Megan worked at SUNY Geneseo managing fundraising initiatives for The Fund for Geneseo. She also holds a dual degree from SUNY Geneseo in Communication and English.

Carol Convertino, Research Associate, Center for Education Research Partnerships, NTID

Carol Convertino has worked at RIT for 25 years, first as a sign language interpreter and for the last seven years as a research associate. She wasn't aware of the number of cats on campus until the formation of this group. A life-long cat lover, she lives with five felines, ages 17 to one year, three of which were rescued from RIT. Carol is treasurer of Caring Hearts.

Linda Coppola received her BA and MLS from SUNY Geneseo and joined the RIT Libraries as the Engineering Librarian. Twenty years ago she traded Engineering for Liberal Arts, a better fit with her English Literature degree. Linda is active in her local public library Friends organization and works on the Perpetual Book Sale Committee. She has a huge personal book collection to which she is constantly adding more volumes, necessitating donating or trading with others to keep things manageable.

Laura has worked at RIT Libraries for almost nine years. Prior to her current position, she has filled many roles, including Library Events Coordinator. Laura holds a B.A. degree in Political Science from the University of Rochester and will complete her MS in Human Resources Development at RIT this fall. When not working, Laura enjoys cooking and taking photos of her husband and their two daughters.

Jennifer has been a Business Reference Librarian since 1995. She graduated from Binghamton University with an undergraduate degree in History and received her Master’s in Library Science from Queens College/City University of New York. She worked for The Conference Board for seven years before coming to RIT. Since 1993, Jennifer has been actively using the Internet and emerging online technologies to connect people and information.

Jenny holds a BS in Communication from SUNY Brockport and is currently in the process of completing her MS in Human Resource Development here at RIT. In addition to volunteering with the Caring Hearts for RIT Cats, Jenny is also on the Better Me Employee Wellness Committee. Jenny has fostered RIT kittens and adopted one herself. In her spare time Jenny plays on Rochester's newly formed Roller Derby League, Roc City Roller Derby.

Barbara Ray Holcomb, Associate Professor of ASL and Interpreting Education, NTID
Deaf Deaf Campus Interactive Activity
Barbara Ray Holcomb is an ASL professor at NTID. She received her BS from SUNY Brockport in Interdisciplinary Arts with a minor in Theater. Her MS degree in Career and Human Resource Development was completed at RIT. She holds Professional Certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) and serves as ASLTA certification evaluator. She is a past vice president of ASLTA and serves as Faculty Advisor of the RITSIGN program. She has presented numerous workshops on sign language teaching and Deaf culture throughout the country. She has conducted a simulation game called, "It's a Deaf, Deaf World," to a variety of groups throughout the country as well.

Kari Horowicz, Fine Arts and Photography Liaison/Librarian, RIT Libraries

Kari has worked at RIT Libraries for twelve years. She received a B.A. in Art History from the University of Rochester and her MLS from Columbia University. She has been promoting the RIT Library image databases to classes within her college for several years. Kari’s outside interests including running, reading, origami, and cheering on RIT athletes. Recently, she has caught the golfing bug.

Linette holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and an M.L.S. from SUNY Buffalo. Before coming to RIT, she worked in libraries at the University of Pennsylvania, SUNY Buffalo, the University of Rochester, and Niagara University. Linette has also worked for a local company that produced a patent searching database. Linette regularly uses both web and RIT-based productivity tools in her daily work life to help her multi-task and be simultaneously more productive and efficient!

Roman has worked at RIT Libraries since 2003. He holds an M.S. degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a B.S. degree in Biology from Cornell University. Roman's interests include providing innovative and interactive library instruction, instructing patrons in the use of citation management systems, use of social networking technology in libraries, and integrating new technologies into library services.

Julia is the Manager of Administrative Operations for the Libraries and the Chair of RIT Staff Council. She has been on staff at RIT since April 1996 and is also a proud alumna of the E. Sue has been at RIT for nearly 30 years, serving the past several on the staff of RIT Libraries - first as the Instruction Librarian and more recently as the Distance/Online Learning Librarian. Sue holds a B.S. degree from RIT and an M.L.S. degree from SUNY Buffalo. As the Distance/Online Learning Librarian, she is continuously looking for new ways to reach students who are not located on campus and to offer learners information in a variety of learning styles.

Joan Naturale is the NTID Academic Librarian and offers support services and classes to students enrolled in a variety of classes. She received her BA from Gallaudet University in English. Her M.Ed degree in Deaf Education was completed at McDaniel College and MILS at URI. Joan has applied her two master’s degrees in the creation of numerous guides and websites to facilitate access to deaf studies and liberal arts studies. She has produced multiple collections related to Deaf people in a variety of platforms. She has 25 years experience teaching a variety of classes in the field.

As Scholarly Communication Coordinator, he oversees the ProQuest/UMI thesis submission process and assists with the production of the quarterly Scholarship@RIT newsletter. Nick has an M.F.A. in Publication Design with a concentration in Media Production from the University of Baltimore. His career encompasses 10+ years of Web and multimedia design experience with a proficiency in many software applications.

Tracy Peterson has been a visiting lecturer in the School of Education at SUNY Geneseo for three years. Prior to that she taught middle school English for eleven years at Mt. Morris Central. She has a B.A. in Psychology and English and an M.S.T. in Secondary English from SUNY Potsdam. She has been helping cats for most of her life and has been fostering kittens for the past three years.

Patrick Reed has over 8 years of web-based programming experience. He has worked as a web developer at RIT Libraries for over 3 years. Prior to that, Patrick worked on image quality analysis and web-based imaging applications in the research labs at the Eastman Kodak Company. Patrick holds a BS in Imaging Systems Management from RIT (1998). He is currently pursuing his MS in Information Technology from the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at RIT. Patrick’s concentration areas are in web site & interactive multimedia, XML data management, and human computer interaction.

Jennifer has been at RIT in the Information Delivery Services department for 10 years. She is responsible for handling Interlibrary Loan requests from RIT students, faculty and staff as well as other various duties. When not at RIT, Jennifer spends her time crocheting, cross-stitching, soap making, candle making, beading, cake decorating, as well as a variety of other crafts.

Jody has worked at RIT for over 20 years, the past seven serving as assistant to the RIT Archivist. Jody has prepared numerous exhibitions in the RIT Museum, the Gallery for RIT History and Art, and in the SAU display cases. She has also been involved with preparing exhibits for special events across campus. Jody holds a B.S. degree from Ithaca College and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies at SUNY Buffalo.

Becky Simmons, RIT Archivist

Becky manages the RIT Archive Collections, which include the RIT Archives, the Deaf Studies Archive and the RIT Art Collection. She is also responsible for mounting exhibits in the RIT Museum. Prior to coming to RIT in 2003, she worked for 18 years in the library at George Eastman House. In addition to an M.L.S. degree in Library Science, Becky has also earned an M.F.A. degree in sculpture and painting. She finds time to work on her own art during the weekends.

Sheila Smokey has been with RIT Libraries for nearly 17 years. Her education includes an M.L.S. degree from San Jose State University and a B.S. Degree in Education from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As the person in charge of ordering all materials for the library, she uses Ebay and other auction sites to acquire hard-to-find books and other resource materials. She spends almost every weekend at garage/estate sales and auctions looking primarily for antiques. She uses CraigsList to locate sales/merchandise and to advertise her own.

Dawn Soufleris, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs
Understanding the RIT Student
Dawn Soufleris is currently the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at RIT and has more than 20 years experience working with college students. She has a Masters degree in Teaching from Binghamton University and has done post-masters coursework in Higher Education at Syracuse University and SUNY Brockport. She is currently a doctoral student at the University of Buffalo. Her professional focus has been within the areas of student conduct, residence life, student activities, alcohol education and prevention, and sexual assault prevention programming. While at RIT, she has been the Project Manager of a $300,000+ grant focused on the use of social norming strategies with first year students, deaf and hard of hearing students and athletes. Dawn has spent over a decade working closely with deaf and hard of hearing students, serves currently as the Student Affairs liaison to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and is proficient in American Sign Language. Dawn has spoken at national conferences on variety of topics, including the impact of technology on college student behavior, social norming, student behavior, ethics and working with differently-abled students and deaf culture.

Elizabeth is an RIT alumni with a BFA in Photojournalism. Before returning to RIT 3 years ago, she worked as a photographer for the Canandaigua Daily Messenger and as a University of Rochester photographer. She has photographed numerous events throughout the area, as well as photographing artwork and exhibits. She currently works completely digitally and has taught several workshops on digital photography.
