Extra Helpings

Are you hungry for answers? Do you thirst for knowledge? Do you have a technology or software related question? Do you want to check your email, blog or Facebook account between Food For Thought sessions? Simply visit the "Extra Helpings" area, located on the Library’s first floor (Re:Search Zone). This area will be open throughout the day, offering computer access and personalized face time with staff from ITS Desktop Support, RIT Online Learning, RIT Libraries Technology Services and other Library staff. If we can’t answer your "Extra Helpings" questions on the spot, we will get back to you with solutions after the event!

Exhibit Tips and Tricks: Planning, Designing and Installing Exhibits

Make the Cut: Video for Web

The power of video as a communication and entertainment tool is undeniable. What makes it great is only partially determined by equipment and captured shots, editing is essential for success. Don your storytelling hats to put together an RIT-themed mash-up video. We will use the free Windows Movie Maker for selecting and mixing clips, pictures and audio, as well as a springboard for discussing the effect of various shots, transitions and camera movements. Participants are encouraged to bring a thumb/usb drive to save work. The session will provide information on captioning and sharing the finished product.

RIT Tools for Productivity

This workshop will cover four helpful tools that staff can use to be more productive. Tiger File Exchanger allows for secure sharing of large files within the RIT network. Clipboard is a home-grown easy-to-use survey tool. The RIT Wiki is a convenient website for group collaboration. Outlook Web Access allows you to read/send email through a web browser. It also has some handy hidden features that we will explore.

MS Office 2007 Tips, Tricks, and New Features

Designed for current MS Office 2003 users, this session will highlight overall enhancements with a focus on MS Powerpoint, MS Word and MS Excel.

Drupal is a free software package that allows multi-user creation and maintainance of web site and content. The distinct permission levels deliver powerful tools for administrators and easy to use interface for content managers. This workshop will demonstrate how to install and configure a Drupal-based site. Further customization such as advanced content types, image galleries and blogging capabilities may be demonstrated based on audience input.

Creating & Self-Publishing Your First Book

Using vital lessons learned while writing/publishing his first novel through Lulu.com, Bob will review his experiences as a novice who wrote/published his first novel in 2008. He will also provide a helpful hints hand-out. Marianne will provide answers to first-time author questions, such as: Why self-publish, how to, and where? What does a Lulu-published book look like? What types of items can be published, and more! Nick will add useful formatting tips on prepping for publication, show Lulu’s manuscript templates, and provide guidance on custom Adobe InDesign layouts. He will review image requirements and how to use Lulu’s cover creation wizard.

Just Duct It: Duct Tape Crafts

We all know that there are 1001 uses for Duct Tape. In this workshop you will learn a few of the more crafty uses. Participants will learn how to make bookmarks, luggage tags, and roses. Other project ideas will be available for participants to make on their own as well.

Don’t Just Call Me, Skype Me!

Skype is free software that allows you to make free voice calls over your computer – to anywhere in the world. With the addition of a webcam, your call becomes a free video call. And, the quality is excellent! This session will demonstrate how to set up a Skype account, how to use Skype, and using a webcam with Skype.

Caring Hearts for RIT Campus Cats: Volunteer Work with a Feral Cat Population

Four members of the volunteer group, Caring Hearts for RIT Cats, will describe their work with feral cats on campus. Unbeknownst to most people, RIT, like most college campuses, has feral cats living on campus grounds. The group’s mission is to have every feral cat at RIT spayed/neutered, fed and cared for over its natural lifespan. Any kittens or tamable adults are carefully adopted out. The group has neutered and/or adopted out 129 cats. Come see pictures of the cats and hear about how a feral cat management program works and how you can help.

Getting LinkedIn to your future: A Guide to Using LinkedIn for Your Career

IM at Work

Instant Messaging isn't just for fun anymore. A recent industry survey shows that 56 percent of businesses are using IM. How can you use IM in your job? When is it appropriate? What are the do's and don'ts? This Brown Bag session will focus on Instant Messaging in the work environment. Various tools will be discussed, including client and web based IM solutions, as well as new types of messaging like Facebook and Twitter. Messaging etiquette will also be covered.

Point, Shoot, and Share: Optimizing Your Digital Photos

This workshop aims to discuss several aspects of shooting digitally with all kinds of digital cameras. We will go over pixels and resolution, how to shoot within different environments, color temperature of lights, and using the flash on a camera. Additionally, the session will include an overview of popular photo sharing sites, sample uploads, photo organization, prints and other products offered on the sites, the different options to print your photos, and the safety of storing your photos.

Organizing with MS Outlook: Mail and Calendaring

This workshop has two main parts; First we will talk about the calendaring system in Outlook to do various tasks, such as scheduling appointments and locations. Then we will show you how to employ rules to automatically turn your jumbled mailbox into an easy to use e-mail filing system.

Deaf Deaf Campus Interactive Activity

Participants arrive to find themselves in a Deaf Deaf campus environment where they are not permitted to use their voices, and where they must work their way through a variety of activities led by deaf and hard of hearing (hh) facilitators. At the end of the simulation, a guided discussion including all participants debriefs the experience. The following objectives of the workshop are to: (1)Expose hearing participants to the everyday experiences of deaf/hh students, faculty and staff in navigating a hearing campus environment, (2)Provide an experience that will help participants understand the barriers to communciation faced by deaf/hh students, faculty and staff on campus and (3)Provide participants with strategies that will improve access to their campus for deaf/hh students, faculty and staff.
