Collection Development Policy Statement: Leisure Reading
I. General Description of the Leisure Collection and Its Users
Due to the relative isolation of the RIT campus, the intense nature of our quarter system, and the need for recreational reading to aid in developing well-rounded, life-long learners, RIT Libraries recognizes the need to make materials available which may fall outside the normal curriculum requirements.
II. Description of the Materials Collected
These materials primarily fall into the following catagories:
A. Those added to the permanent collection:
- Sports and games
- Gardening and home improvement
- Sewing and crafts
- Self-improvement
- Animals - pets and wildlife
- Popular films/movies (5-day videos)
B. Those popular titles which are are more likely to be ethereal and of passing interest (14-day books/audiobooks):
For this reason, the RIT Libraries have contracts to lease these popular titles in hardcover and in audiotape/cd formats on an 18 month rotating cycle. We lease these titles to allow us to frequently add to and change the mix of titles available. Leasing audiobooks is preferred to buying them, because the wear and tear they receive from multiple users frequently destroys them within the first year. The leasing vendor will replace them as needed during the cycle. Audiobooks are procured unabridged whenever possible. New titles are received monthly. Three to four times per year, this collection rotates and hardcover titles older than 18 months which are not purchased for the permanent collection are offered to our patrons for sale at a reduced rate. Those titles which are not sold and all audiobooks must be returned to the vendor at the end of their lease cycle.
Requests and suggestions for materials that fall into the above categories may be submitted by filling out the Suggest New Library Materials form.
