Cross-Disciplinary Professional Studies Tutorial
This tutorial provides a shortcut to RIT Library resources of special interest
to the Cross-Disciplinary Professional Studies program, including the most relevant
research databases, journals and how to obtain documents, as well as course
reserves and librarians to contact.
General Library Information
For information about library services, check out the resources & services
at the College of Applied Science and Technology's
library site. As this degree offers an opportunity to draw on more than
50 RIT graduate programs, subject specialists from all areas are listed. To
view all library resources listed by subject area or college, visit the Databases,
Articles & More page.
Research Databases
Choosing which Database to Search
Given the eclectic nature of the Cross-Disciplinary Program where students
can choose up to three professional concentrations, a variety of databases will
be utilized. RIT Library subscribes to several hundred databases. The Databases,
Articles & More link provides an alphabetical list of databases (use
this only when knowing the appropriate database to use). Databases are also
listed by subject. Accessing library resources by college provides database
lists and library catalogs, research guides, selected subject-specific websites,
and more.
Accessing Databases from Off-Campus
RIT's licensing agreements with the database providers require that access
to these databases be restricted to RIT students, faculty, and staff. If you
are off-campus and try to connect to these databases using any other Internet
service than RIT's Dial IP service, the database introductory page will request
your DCE account name and password.
If you are enrolled in the Cross-Disciplinary Studies program and do not have
a DCE account, contact Susan Mee at 585.475.2568 or samwml@rit.edu.

Obtaining Journal Articles, Books, and other Documents
Information Delivery Services (IDS) sends
books and photocopies to Distance Learning Students upon request. IDS supplies
books and articles from the RIT Library as well as from other libraries and delivery
services. Additional borrowing information for online learners is available here.
Einstein, RIT Library's catalog, can
be searched from every page on the library's web site using the search box in
the top left-hand corner of each page. To see the latest library acquisitions,
A number of books and journals are available in full-text online. To see what
RIT Library provides, check RIT
Library E-Content Finder.

Course Reserves
Your professor may have put articles on reserve for you to read. Check the myLibrary Link in your course navigation bar in myCourses or the RIT
Library Course Reserves for access.
World Wide Web Sources
One of the required Cross-Disciplinary courses entails researching various
careers. Check out the general and
specific career websites. Of particular note: the Occupational
Outlook Handbook- a government-created site encompassing descriptions of
"what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education
needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations."
The Multidisciplinary Databases
are useful to search for articles regarding careers.
As you are probably aware, the Web is exploding with information, much of which
is useful, but it cannot be taken at face value. Since anyone can publish a
web page, it is important to evaluate the quality and accuracy of information
found on the web. Information on evaluating web resources can be found at
Evaluating
Information From the Internet.
