Setting Up Outlook
Express 5 on a PC
|
What is Outlook Express?
Outlook Express is a graphical
e-mail program for Macintosh and PC computers. It has a point and click interface
for reading e-mail on the RIT VAX/VMS system or OSF UNIX (grace) system. By
setting the program up with IMAP settings, explained in the following tutorial,
e-mail can be read and tracked properly from multiple locations. (i.e. work,
home).
Where
to Get Outlook Express?
Many computers with Windows
95, Windows 98, Windows NT and newer Macintosh operating systems come with Outlook
Express already installed. Outlook Express is part of the Internet Explorer
installer program, even though it can be run as a separate program. If you wish
to use the only the Outlook Express piece of Internet Explorer, you can install
Internet Explorer and delete all but the Outlook Express piece. If it is not
already installed on your system, Outlook Express is freely available for download
at the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com.
Alternative locations to get it from are Download.com web site at http://www.download.com.

|
Why choose
Plain Text? What is HTML Mail anyway?
HTML mail allows
you to use various fonts, colors, and other special effects in your
mail messages. However, only people who use Netscape Messenger,
Microsoft Outlook Express or other IMAP programs will be able to
read your messages if you send them with HTML checked.
People using PMDF/VAX Mail, or other text-only mail programs will
receive what they will probably perceive to be a mess of text and
computer code called HTML. There are ways around this, but they
generally end up being confusing for both the sender and the receiver
of the mail. Therefore, it is best to uncheck HTML messages unless
you are sure everyone who will be receiving your mail is using Netscape
Messenger or Microsoft Outlook Express.
