Other options
for serving a web page
Option 1: Run your own webserver. Web pages can be made public from any
Internet connected computer that runs web server software.
- Some departments or colleges run their own server if they have the technical
and staff resources to maintain it. They can still be an integrated part of
the RIT Webpage if there is a pointer made from the RIT web page to the department
web server.
- Students in the Computer Science or Information Technology programs may
choose to run their web pages from their department servers. Some clubs such
as Computer Science House also run their own server.
Option 2: Buy an account from an outside Internet service provider
If you want to create a webpage for commercial use or that has functions not
supplied by RIT, you can buy space on a computer elsewhere. Many Internet Service
Providers are available world-wide. Try your local local phonebook, newspapers
or directories of providers, such as The
List at http://thelist.iworld.com/ Shop around for best prices and services.
Ask questions about what support is provided and what is allowed technically
and by policy for that provider.
Option 3: Find a free hosting service on the Internet. Use a search engine
to search for free hosting.
Read the conditions required for such a web page or site. Some require you
to run the site or other advertising. They may also have policies about what
kind of site you can run.
