Citing CQ Researcher Using MLA and APA Using Noodlebib

This information is from Noodlebib Knowledge Quest. http://www.noodletools.com/kb/index.php?article=135

CQ Researcher is:

a. a continuously paged periodical published thematically with a single title for each issue
b. a magazine (not a journal) because it is published often and the contents are not scholarly
c. written by a single author.

CQ Researcher is an online copy (HTML) or exact duplicate (PDF) of the print periodical and, therefore, is considered an online magazine for MLA citation purposes.

When citing the CQ Researcher (retrieved online) in Noodlebib http://wally.rit.edu/electronic/noodletools/noodletools.html:

a. choose “magazine” as the citation type from the drop-down menu
b. select “online” as the publication medium
c. select “ an article”

When asked for info about online retrieval of the source:

a. PDF version (recommended). Select “ Yes, info about a print publication is provided” since you are viewing a duplicate of the print magazine and you will be able to provide page numbers.

b. Web (HTML) version, select “No…..specific info about a printed issue is not given”.

Select periodical subscription (not “subscription database”) because this is an online magazine that your library subscribes to. Note: databases index many periodicals, different from CQ Researcher, which indexes only one title.

Identifying the URL- Use the unique, persistent link if available. If not, use the URL of the search page.

Since CQ Researcher is a magazine, give the full date, but not volume or issue numbers even if they are shown.

MLA Example of a PDF version

Hansen, Brian. “Combating Plagiarism.” CQ Researcher. 19 Sept. 2003. 773-96. 5 July 2005 < http://www.cqpress.com/docs/Combating%20Plagiarism.pdf >

MLA Example of an HTML version -Give CQ Researcher Online as the name of the magazine and omit page numbers.

Hanson, Brian. “Combating Plagiarism.” CQ Researcher Online 19 Sept. 2003. 3 Aug. 2005 http://library2.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/document.php?id=cqresre2003091900&type=hitlist.

APA Citation

Since there is a PDF version of every issue, we can assume that it is identical to the print magazine. Select “ Exact reproduction of original printed source as the online retrieval mechanism” and treat it as “internet article based on a print source”.

You will not provide online retrieval info (URL, date accessed etc) since formatting, pagination, and content are identical to the print. The words “Electronic version” will be added to the resulting citation and no URL is required.

Select magazine article.

APA citation for PDF version

Hansen, B. (2003, September 19). Combating plagiarism [Electronic version]. CQ Researcher, 13(32).

APA citation for HTML version - Select URL under “ Info about online retrieval of this source” and give CQ Researcher Online as the name of the magazine. The URL and date retrieved will be included in the citation.
