Managing Your Account

Renewing Library Material

Books from our leisure collection and general circulating collection can be renewed as many times as you would like as long as another user has not requested use of that material. Self-renewals can be done by visiting http://library.rit.edu/myaccount. You can also renew by calling our Circulation Desk at (585)475-2562 (voice) or (585) 475-2962 (TTY) or by emailing us at circwml@rit.edu

Unfortunately there are times when we are unable to process renewal requests. Examples are as follows:

  • The item has been requested by another user
  • You are not currently registered for courses
  • You are not currently employed by RIT (faculty/staff)
  • The primary card holder is no longer affiliated with RIT (family borrowers)
  • You have fines of more than $5 on your Library account
  • Your materials are grossly overdue and have already been billed for replacement (please see our fines policies for further details

Receiving Library Notices

The Library processes daily notices to help keep patrons updated on overdue items, fines, and holds. All current students should automatically receive any Library notices directly via an email to their RIT account. If we do not have an email address on file for you, notices will be sent to the mailing address in your Library account. Mailing addresses should always be updated in the student information system. A Circulation Associate can assist you in reviewing your mailing address and/or email address maintained in our system.

If you are not currently receiving Library notices via email and you would like to update your account with your information you can simply call us at (585) 475-2562 (voice) or (585) 475-2962 (TTY) or email Joan Rausch at jxrwml@rit.edu.

If you believe you have received an overdue notice in error you can read our Claims Returned Procedure and fill out the Claims Returned Form. If you feel you have received a fine or billing notice in error please fill out our Fines Grievance Form.

Placing Library Holds

If you are in need of a book that is currently checked out to another patron you can place a hold on that item by clicking the "request" button at the bottom of the item record when you are viewing it in our catalog.

Once you have requested use of an item the Library will issue a notice to the patron currently utilizing the item to notify them that another patron has requested use of the item. This notice will inform the patron of the date the book should be returned by. Failure to return this shared resource in a timely manner may result in fines of up to $1 per day.

The Library recalls material from all borrowers and our recall fines apply to all.

Once your requested item has been returned it will be held at the Circulation Desk for you and you will be notified via a Library notice. Leisure material will be held for 4 days from the date of the notice and regular circulating items will be held for 7 days.
