The Publishing & Scholarship Support Center (PSSC) provides RIT faculty, students, and other community members with a one-stop service for advice and assistance in preparing articles, books and other documents for publication. The Center offers help with scholarly editing practices, copyright queries, appropriate citation control, graduate thesis/dissertation binding, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database assistance. Publication technologies, such as self-publishing and posting materials in the DML (RIT's institutional repository) are offered to ensure that faculty and student research is available and circulated in the most meaningful and useful ways. The scholarly activity-based newsletter reports on RIT research and collaborative scholarship. These services are offered to provide reliable and timely assistance to support the effort of scholarship at RIT.

The Center is professionally staffed and has computers, software, reference books, and guides to assist with your scholarly communication needs.

Contents

    • RIT Faculty and student research can be located by using an easily searchable interface.
    • Authors can showcase their work by emailing the item’s unique identifier url to colleagues, peers, and current or prospective employers.
    • Asserts copyright ownership.
    • Theses available online or deposited in institutional repositories are cited more frequently (336%) and hence, are more visible, accessible, and have greater scholarly impact.
    • Allows authors to freely and perpetually link to their research output (the DML is committed to maintaining the archive in perpetuity).
    • Examples of students’ work can be used by other students in preparation for writing their own theses/projects/dissertations.

STUDENTS: Student theses, graduate projects and doctoral dissertations are an under-utilized but significant source of primary research. The Library wants to maximize public open access to these important resources.

These items are needed to post a thesis/project/dissertation in the RIT DML:

    • An electronic copy of the thesis/project/dissertation
      • Email Nick Paulus at njpwml@rit.edu with the electronic copy or provide a copy on disk.
      • Ideally, the e-version and the print version should be submitted simultaneously.
      • Any accompanying files in other formats, such as Excel or PowerPoint files should be submitted at this time.
    • Keywords
      • Submit approximately five keywords to describe the document.
    • Committee signature page
      • Only include the printed names of the thesis/project/dissertation committee due to the risk of identity theft, no signatures please.

Faculty Editing Services
An experienced editorial staff is available to edit your abstracts, articles, presentations, grant proposals and more. Minimum turnaround time is two full business days (large files may require more time). Editors use Track Changes in Microsoft Word and email the document back to the author.

All original papers and papers being reviewed for a second time should be submitted with a completed Editing Assistance Form (see below) to Nick Paulus at njpwml@rit.edu or print the completed form and bring it to the Center with your project that needs reviewing.

Quotes from RIT faculty who recently used our services:

“The editing service quite simply, is an outstanding benefit available to faculty and students. My dissertation had already gone through committee and self-editing several times. I submitted thinking that it wasn't necessary, but 'one more look' couldn't hurt. The initial request response was immediate, the turnaround time was within reasonable deadlines, and more importantly, the editing service found many items missed in those other reviews.”
    - Linda A. Tolan

“The PSSS is a valuable resource to the RIT community. The professional services offered have saved me countless hours of proofreading and has helped me to more efficiently prepare work for publication, helping me to nearly double my scholarly output.”
    - Alex Bitterman

Graduate Student Support

Writing Assistance Service for Graduate Students

Our experienced editing staff is available to offer writing assistance for your class papers, projects, thesis or dissertation. Minimum turnaround time is two full business days (large files may require more time).

Using Track Changes in Microsoft Word, our editorial staff will:

    • Review overall work: Look at the piece as a whole. Does it have a solid lead, a good conclusion, a workable structure, sufficient & authoritative, supportive examples?
    • Look for consistency and if the paper follows writing guidelines: Consistent writing/fonts/citation styles, grammar, proper tense, punctuation, spelling, etc.
    • Provide suggestions: Move blocks of text, provide examples, point to writing assistance links on the PSSC website and referral information for more extensive assistance.

Student papers can be reviewed a maximum of two times. If substantial additional content is added to a document, the new content will be considered for review at the discretion of the Publishing & Scholarship Support Services.

All original papers and those being reviewed for a second time should be electronically submitted with a completed Editing Assistance Form (see below) or print the completed form and bring it to the Center with your writing that needs reviewing.

“Just as a sculpture is enhanced by being polished, writing is enhanced by having a qualified third party edit it. This is precisely what the Publishing and Scholarship Support Services does. It provides editing services in a very fast and effective way. It also provides other great services for scholars. I highly recommended taking advantage of this invaluable support service.”
