Description

Nick Benson is the son of John E. Benson, who, in turn, was the son of John Howard Benson. All have been proprietors of the John Stevens Shop, the oldest continuously-operating letter-cutting studio in the U.S. The Benson Family has executed designs for the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Arlington, the National Gallery of Art, the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, AL, and the Federal Courthouse in Boston. This alphabet stone features an intertwined calligraphic alphabet designed by Nicholas Benson and cut by him in fine-grained French limestone. The work was commissioned by the Melbert B. Cary Jr. Graphic Arts Collection, Rochester Institute of Technology Libraries, in 2008.
