Copperplate engraved illustration in Joseph Moxon's Mechanick Exercises. Joseph Moxon wrote and published the first printer's manual in 1683 in the middle of a controversy over who deserved credit for the so-called invention of printing. Partisans of the Dutch prototypographer Jan Coster were convinced that his work with moveable type, while crude, nonetheless preceded Gutenberg's experiments by several decades.

This engraving is based on an earlier one by Petrus Scriverius published in Haarlem in 1628.
