Lucanus, Pharsalia, Venice: G. and A. Alvise, 1478.

The printing of the Alvise brothers in Venice was unremarkable except for one fact: they were the first to make use of cast ornaments which could be arranged into different patterns and printed along with the type. The inclusion of type ornaments or flowers in printed books became very popular in the 16th century, particularly in France. The detail shows a beautiful hand-colored initial and type-case ornaments.
