The operations of type design and manufacturing were slowly separated from the responsibilities of the printer. By the middle of the 16th century, a number of typefounders were in business for themselves. The greatest of them all was Claude Garamond, (ca. 1480–1561). His oldstyle designs, based on the Aldine model, dominated the composing rooms of printers well into the 18th century.
