What is LIV@RIT?
LIV@RIT is a self-paced interactive tutorial designed to introduce RIT students to a variety of important concepts related to the use of information resources in an academic setting. LIV@RIT is intended to help students maximize their ability to effectively use the RIT Libraries' information resources and the World Wide Web.

Who is LIV@RIT designed for?
LIV@RIT is designed for students who need to acquire information veracity and information literacy skills. It is also for students taking classes with a writing or research component.

What research skills are taught in the modules?
Each of the eight modules in LIV@RIT is designed to teach a different aspect of information veracity/literacy skills:

  •    Module One:  Identifying Resources explains the different types of information sources you can use for your research.
  •    Module Two:  Choosing Topics explains topic selection and how to identify keywords to search your topic.
  •    Module Three: Searching the RIT Libraries Catalog explains how to use the catalog.
  •    Module Four: Finding Articles, explains how to use online databases to find articles for your research.
  •    Module Five: Using the Web explains how to use the Web effectively.
  •    Module Six: Evaluating Information Sources  explains how to evaluate the integrity of  information sources.
  •    Module Seven: Plagiarism and Copyright, explains plagiarism and how to avoid it; presents the basics of copyright.
  •    Module Eight:  Citing Sources, explains citations and how to document your information sources.

How long are the modules?
Each module is designed to take less than 60 minutes from beginning through the final quiz. Actual time spent on each module will vary depending on the student's familiarity with the topics.

How do students access LIV@RIT?
Students can access LIV@RIT 24/7 on any computer with an Internet connection.

Who can access LIV@RIT?
Anyone can use the LIV@RIT tutorials.  The quizzes, however, require an RIT computer account to login.  Therefore, quizzes are  restricted to only those with an active RIT computer account (students, faculty and staff).

How do the quizzes work?
At the end of each module is a brief self-assessment section or quiz. Quizzes are no longer than 10 questions. As students answer each question, they will immediately get a response. The final quiz page will give them a summary of their answers and the percentage correct. Students may take the quiz as many times as they like. However, they must complete the quiz each time before they can click on the Retake Quiz button to restart the quiz.  We suggest faculty require students to pass the quizzes with a score of 85% or better.

View your achievements:
LIV@RIT incorporates concepts from gaming such as including badges, leveling up and unlocking achievements.  As a user progresses through a module and takes the quiz he/she will unlock the achievement for that module.  Once all eight achievements have been unlocked, a final reward will be revealed.  The modules have been designed in a learning progression but do not have to be viewed in sequential progression in order to reveal the final reward.  Individual modules can be viewed as needed but the final reward will only be revealed when all eight modules have been viewed and all quizzes submitted.

Info for Faculty:
Instructor Login Page:
Faculty assigning LIV@RIT tutorials are able to monitor their student's progress via the Instructor login page.  This page is accessible via the header menu of each page of every module in the LIV@RIT tutorials.  Upon login, using your RIT computer user name and password, you will see a list of all courses you have taught.  The courses are sorted by quarter with the current quarter at the top of the list.  Select the course in which you are assigning the LIV@RIT tutorials and you will see it is then populated with students currently registered in the course.  You will also see a display showing the grade results for each quiz.  Although quizzes can be taken repeatedly, only the most recent grade will be displayed.

How can instructors effectively use LIV@RIT with their courses?
Faculty can refer their students to LIV@RIT at any time during a course. Faculty may choose to assign all eight LIV@RIT modules or individual modules as needed.  Modules may be assigned as required course work, optional assignments, or for extra credit. To gain the most benefit, it is recommended that students complete LIV@RIT before they begin their research. Students can return to any of the modules to refresh their information veracity skills at any time.

Does LIV@RIT replace library instruction?
No! RIT Libraries continues to offer individual consultations and course-related library instruction. We encourage faculty to incorporate a library session into their syllabi. Timing is important! Ideally, faculty should have their students complete LIV@RIT and supplement it with face-to-face library instruction after students have received an assignment. Research has shown that

  •     Students learn best and retain most when they need the information.
  •     Library instruction is more effective when the course instructor is present.
  •     Library instruction is more effective when coordinated with a class assignment.

Instructors can contact their liaison librarian to arrange a library instruction session
